Teachers’ strikes ramp up as French-language educators launch provincewide pickets

Ontario’s French-language Catholic and public teachers are taking a historic step by hitting the picket lines next week, joining other teachers’ unions in strike action. The union representing the province’s 12,000 French-language elementary and high school teachers will begin weekly provincewide strikes, with the first scheduled for next Thursday. Until now, AEFO was the only one of the province’s four teachers’ unions not yet to hit the picket lines. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) — its 83,000 members include public elementary teachers and early childhood educators — will continue holding daily rotating strikes that impact select boards and has planned a provincewide walkout for Tuesday. Unlike the unions representing English-language teachers, which have been at loggerheads with the province, AEFO is waging several battles, he said.
