Thousands of protesters yesterday took to the streets of Kaduna metropolis in support of the state government’s sack of workers and teachers who failed competency test recently. Unlike Thursday, where hoodlums attempted to disrupt the protest organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), there was no intrusion of the rally organised by pro-government protesters, as security personnel looked on as the protest progressed. The protest came 24 hours after leaders of the labour unions and the Nigeria Union of Teachers joined others in the state to protest the sack of 21,000 teachers that failed the test organised by the government. Meanwhile, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, yesterday, reiterated his stance to sack the teachers in spite of the protest, saying he would not rescind the decision under whatever guise. “We knew they would be a resistance, but for us, education is one of the foundational components of building a modern society.
