Tea prices close on 2-dollar mark at weekly auction

Tea auction prices have been on an upward trend in the past three weeks, showing recovery signs towards the traditional two-dollar mark. A kilo at the Mombasa auction averaged $1.93 (Sh210.18) this week, a slight increase from $1.91(Sh208) in last week's trading. The total volume traded this week was 412,312 kilos more than last week, the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA) data indicates. Auction prices determine farmers’ final earnings. The 54 tea factory companies managed by the Kenya Tea Development Agency Management Services Limited this month released Sh27.62 billion, being the final payment, popularly known as “bonus”, to tea farmers.
