For those who like a challenge, Kakepuku is the Hakarimata Summit Track of the south. It's one of six tours available on the Te Ara Wai Journeys website, an innovative new digital storytelling initiative launched by Waipā District Council in conjunction with Te Awamutu Museum last December. There is a Te Ara Wai Journeys signboard here, with a map and a brief background on the four stops on the journey up the maunga. Volunteers from Kakepuku Mountain Conservation Project hand-reared and fed the juvenile birds for five months to help them get established.
