One of the photographer’s subjects in 1925 was an elegant man and woman – Dix and his new wife Martha. Koch was quite happy about their liaison and subsequent marriage, because he was already having an affair with her sister. Dix was denounced as a “degenerate artist” in 1933, and eight of his works featured in an exhibition of degenerate art organised by the Nazis in 1937. The exhibition, including many paintings confiscated from museums, was intended to pillory the condemned artists but proved hugely popular, seen by a million people in the first six weeks. Both men survived the second world war, although Dix was conscripted by the Nazis into the Volkssturm militia, and briefly captured by French troops.
