About 2000 rainbow trout are raised for release each year at the Hāwera hatchery. Each year the Hāwera hatchery receives thousands of tiny rainbow trout ova ready to be hatched into fry and grown into yearlings for release. Brown trout were once reared at the hatchery but the bigger species' solitary nature made breeding difficult and the focus reverted to rainbow trout.
