Taranaki beekeeper creates technology to trace honey to hiveSIMON O'CONNOR/STUFF Brett Mascull has been recognised for his innovate technology that helps trace honey back to the hive. The ability to trace honey back to the hive was a three year project for beekeeper Brett Mascull. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) - a system that uses radio waves to read tags and cards for identification - the Hivetech system allows for "pot to hive" traceability, Mascull said. Mascull, the owner of Naki New Zealand Honey in Lepperton, created the system after a larger contract extraction company left a bad taste in his mouth during his first year in the honey business. Ministry for Primary Industries were interested in this technology, Mascull said, as bee hives could be a "great indicator of biosecurity risk from insects arriving on containers from foreign ports" such as other bees or wasps.
