Tapwrit, showing great grit under the superb jockey Jose Ortiz, took the odds-favorite Irish War Cry in the stretch to win the 2017 Belmont. Irish War Cry showed great mettle during the race, contesting the lead through much of the backstretch and into the far turn. The 2017 Belmont presented a master class of what a major classic stakes race looks like as a tactical jockey-driven contest. Tapwrit, who had plenty of gas left in the tank, paid §12.60 to win. Irish War Cry paid $4.70 to place.
