Disqualification of the four pan-democratic lawmakers was not a random decision or an abuse of power by the National People’s Congress standing committee, Hong Kong delegate Tam Yiu-chung said. He said the NPCSC only intervened on the matter because it could not be handled by the Hong Kong administration. Basic Law Committee vice chairwoman Maria Tam Wai-chu said the quartet’s disqualification will set a legal framework for local legislation on oath-taking issues. However, Maria Tam also said she does not understand the reasoning behind pan-dem’s mass resignation.
