Five years ago, Selvakumar Shanmugam and Balan Ekambaram went on a long drive to China from Malaysia on an impulse. Since Penanghas a Meenakshi Temple and we thought of starting the ride there and ending it at the Madurai Meenakshi Temple,” says Shanmugam. “Our ancestors are from Ilayankudi and we have always been taking a flight in the past to come here. The duo along with a Chinese friend Michael Saw set off from Penang 40 days ago and crossed six countries to reach Madurai. However, certain stretches in interior Assam were a nightmare, as the highway literally narrowed down to streets with people, animals and vehicles all jostling for space,” shares Shanmugam.
