Micro-targeting voters has been around for two decades: postal codes and census data, and tracking magazine and cable usage. Parties bought data for exclusively male, heavy baseball watchers, under 30, and then chose the best message and delivery vehicle. Should voters not demand that those seeking their votes publicly promise they will never use private personal data as a campaign tool, that they will not buy any such data no matter how or where acquired? They will not use media or social media platforms that do not offer credible protections against the misuse and sale of their data? likely this year, big city elections later this year, Alberta and a federal election in 2019.
