ARCTIC BAY, NUNAVUT—Exploring this Inuit hamlet of 900 after an ice floe camping trip, I’m struck by the traffic, a steady parade of trucks, cars, quads and bikes. Men are congregating by wooden sleds on the sea ice, while kids, moms and grandparents amble around town enjoying the 24-hour sun. In Inuktitut, the name Arctic Bay is Ikpiarjuk, for the “pocket.” My Toronto neighbourhood is also called the Pocket. It also sells local carvings, paintings, hats, mittens and jewelry. I nab a free Arctic Bay pin and a free booklet put together by local youth called The Art and Artists of Arctic Bay, Nunavut.
