Certain things must be done as fast as possible, while other things need to be done after comprehensive consultations with all the relevant stakeholders. The Rome Statute and Icerd were similar in that both are international treaties with elements of human rights. Doing things at a more measured pace also allows for more time to consult with all the relevant stakeholders and the public before making a decision. In the case of the Rome Statute, perhaps it would have been better for everyone if the government had taken the time to engage in a consultative process. We must learn the lessons of the Rome Statute, Icerd and even of the proposed Constitutional amendments regarding the status of Sabah and Sarawak.
