The New Zealand Garden Bird Survey is an annual citizen science project which has been led by scientists at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, one of New Zealand’s Crown Research Institutes, for the last 14 years. Taking part in the Garden Bird Survey involves spending an hour over the survey period counting the native and non-native bird species in your garden, or in a local park or reserve, and recording the highest number of each species seen at any one time. HOW IS IT DOING: Not threatened, although the New Zealand Garden Bird Survey has seen a consistent shallow to moderate decline in the number spotted over several years. MYNANZ-Gardener This introduced bird is widely considered a pest with the bird survey showing a shallow increase nationally. Kererū bird survey sightings have increased rapidly all over New Zealand, most significantly in Wellington (up by 124 per cent!)
