The debates over the King St. transit corridor, a yearlong pilot project, have stirred up emotions that are never far from the surface in Toronto. A ride through the city’s history of dealing with change — specifically new modes of transportation — shows that we’ve been having many of the same arguments for a century. At the end of the 19th century, our streetcars, formerly drawn by overworked horses, went electric — around the same time that cyclists brought new speed and tension to the streets. Greeting every change was that truly timeless Toronto anxiety, worry, and bickering. Congestion problems have plagued the city for more than a century.
