The catastrophic ferry fire in Jhalakathi last month claimed 50 lives, with many that jumped into the river remaining missing. The committee found evidence against 12 people, including four government officials and four owners of the launch. Second, taking civil organizations’ efforts into account will help build confidence in the government’s sincerity. Currently, the compensation victims get are in the form of charity, either from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund or from ad hoc funds generated at a high official's discretion. The authorities must immediately focus on creating a legislative framework for compensation to victims and victim families.
