Taiwanese Tsao Chun-yu (曹純玉) ran the 2019 Tokyo Marathon in a time of just over two hours and 36 minutes on Sunday, breaking a 15-year national record and finishing 17th in the women's race. Tsao broke the Taiwan record of 2:39:53 set by Hsu Yu-fang (許玉芳) in the 2004 Xiamen International Marathon. After the Tokyo Marathon, Tsao said that while she did not achieve her personal goal of finishing under 2:35, she was pleased to have broken the national record for a female marathoner with her time of 2:36:14. With that time, Tsao has also qualified for the 2019 World Athletics Championships, which will be held Sept. 27 to Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar. According to the Japanese TV station NHK, 38,000 runners took part in the marathon, which started in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku and ended at Tokyo Station.
