By Davina Tham / Staff reporterWhen Eric Ku (顧國瀚) told his parents that he was gay, they refused to accept it. “Any deviance from proper Chinese behavior and values... is an attack on the type of family my parents worked so hard to construct,” Ku says. Around his family, who live in the US, Ku now feels “very Taiwanese in a restrictive kind of way.” But his sense of kinship with Taiwanese culture also motivated him to move back six years ago, when he found a job lecturing in English instruction at the University of Taipei. Taiwanese parachute kids first set off in the 1980s, amid rapid economic growth and new affluence. In 1990, a study released by the University of California, Los Angeles estimated that there were 40,000 Taiwanese parachute kids in the US.
