The first batch of images sent back from FORMOSAT-5, Taiwan's first indigenous satellite, after it was launch into space on Aug. 25 was far from perfect. The photos, beamed back to Earth on Sept. 8, are blurred and tainted with light spots. The National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL), the developer of the satellite, said Tuesday that they suspect the problems were caused by a focus length offset at the remote sensing instrument - the "camera" of the satellite. The NARL said it is now trying to fix the issue through changing the temperature inside the satellite to change the remote sensing instrument's focus length and by simulating an adjustment of the satellite's altitude to fit the offset focus length. The NARL said it might take around two to three months for these measures to have an effect.
