TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Feng Shih-kuan, the Taiwanese defense minister famous for his quotability, came with his latest headline grabber today, when he told lawmakers that the fact Taiwan hadn't suffered an attack and been wiped off the face of the Earth was proof enough his armed forces were doing a bang-up job. "The Defense Ministry's efforts are the reason why you are able to sit here safely and question me today," Feng told KMT Legislator Lu Yu-ling (呂玉玲), who asked Feng to elaborate on what the ministry had done in the past year. Equipped with survey results ranking Cabinet members by popular support, Lu asked Feng why his frequent gaffes hadn't landed him in the bottom three. The question's premise didn't sit well with Feng, who said: "I've never felt that I was making gaffes." Last year, on the tail end of a slew of military scandals, including an accidental missile firing that killed a fisherman, he scored himself "100 out of 100" in job performance.
