more-inActivists of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) on Monday were arrested by the police when they attempted to stage a protest in Royapettah, opposing some rituals that Brahmins practice. As Monday was observed as Avani Avittam by many, involving rituals of changing the sacred thread worn by Brahmins, they sought to adorn pigs with the thread. Activists of TPDK led by its Madurai district unit organiser Tamil Pithan brought four pigs near the AIADMK headquarters and attempted to string the sacred thread or poonool on to the animals. Police personnel, along with the officials of Chennai Corporation, aborted the activists’ attempt to put the sacred thread. The police said the activists had brought five pigs from Villupuram, of which one had died on the way to the city.
