Aug. 22: Trinamul through defections today gained control of the zilla parishads of Malda and Jalpaiguri, areas where the Left and the Congress commanded some clout. The Malda zilla parishad was held by the Congress with outside support from the Left. The Jalpaiguri zilla parishad was with the Left. The majority number for the 38-member Malda zilla parishad is 20. In Jalpaiguri's 19-member parishad, the Left had 14 members, Trinamul four and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had one member.
