Trying to predict Oscar winners in September is as perilous a task as guessing when the hilariously wonky escalators at the Scotiabank Theatre might be working. There’s no shortage of candidates: TIFF’s movie-adoring audiences have boosted numerous Academy Awards campaigns, including last year’s Best Picture winner Spotlight. There is one bold prediction that can be made now, as TIFF heads into its closing weekend and awards. There’s much more diversity in the “Oscar conversation” this year, and it’s entirely deserved. Films like Moonlight, Loving, The Birth of a Nation and the in-progress Hidden Figures, all well-received at TIFF, told layered and meaningful stories beyond Hollywood’s usual vanilla gaze.
