TIFF lands Leonardo DiCaprio documentary

TIFF unveiled the movies in popular genre series Midnight Madness, TIFF Docs and the boundary-pushing Vanguard program, along with cinema classics worth a second look on the Cinematheque bill and another 41 short films from around the world on Tuesday. “Revelations abound in this year’s crop of documentaries,” said TIFF Docs programmer Thom Powers, pointing to works about African-American novelist James Baldwin (I Am Not Your Negro) and a re-examination of student Amanda Knox’s two murder trials (Amanda Knox). TIFF runs from Sept. 8 to 18. Actor-environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary call to save an imperiled planet, a hotly anticipated sequel to a horror classic and movies about musicians from The Beatles to The Stooges are among the latest titles announced for the 41st Toronto International Film Festival. Also premiering is Canadian director Richie Mehta’s India in a Day, the result of an open invitation to people across India to video moments in their lives during the same 24-hour period.
