FACT SHEET: A standard gauge railway fact sheet from Kenya Railways has Clement Mwathi a little worried about what it portends for the country. According the firm, 95 per cent of cargo is today transported by road, and with the new railway, this will be reduced to 50 per cent. But the same fact sheet, Mwathi adds, indicates that 1.6 million tonnes is transported annually and this will increase to 22 million tonnes. “If 50 per cent of this is moved by rail, then it means that road cargo will increase from 1.6 million to 11 million tonnes. “And why do the same old names continue to dominate the political scene even in this new era?
