TDSB trustees approve new ward boundaries

Toronto District School Board trustees have approved new ward boundaries that will balance the number of schools in each district, but expressed opposition to the provincial government requiring new boundaries in the midst of an election and without public consultation. Following the provincial government’s unexpected decision to reduce the size of Toronto city council from 47 to 25 members, TDSB officials hurriedly began drawing up new options for trustee ward boundaries to correspond with the new municipal wards. Toronto District School Board trustees considered several different ward maps, and chose an option that attempts to balance out the number of schools in each ward. In the motion trustees accepted, they emphasized that the board opposed the changing of ward boundaries in the middle of an election and without public consultation, and that the board’s approval would not prejudice “any future legal action” they might take. In February, the board had approved new trustee ward boundaries that aligned with the city’s decision to increase the number of councillors to 47.
