Wafaa, a mother of three, was killed as she drove other women to a funeral in the Damascus neighborhood of Muhajereen. Life is harder now, said Jihan, who said the women are watching the tragedy in Aleppo with despair, though they’re still able to buy soap from small factories in the suburbs of that city. “The women in Damascus even more than us. They’re willing to do anything they can.”In the United States, the cooperative sells through Chicago-based Karam Foundation, founded in 2007 by a Syrian writer and architect, Lina Sergie Attar.
