PETALING JAYA: Two-time Olympian diver Bryan Nickson Lomas has reservations about the National Sports Institute’s (NSI) decision to hire an Australian to replace Yang Zhuliang as the national head coach. Even Australia has hired China coaches in the past, including Zhuliang and Hui Tong. The NSI are expected to name Christian Brooker, who was named Australia’s best youth coach in 2014, to replace Zhuliang next month. However, I’m not sure how an Australian coach will impact our current set-up, it’ll be something very new to us. “Coaches from China emphasise on long training hours and are different from Australian or European coaches,” said Bryan.
