Swimmer hospitalised after being rescued at wild Auckland beach

A man was taken to hospital in a serious condition after an incident at West Auckland beach. The man was swimming at O'Neill Bay, 1 kilometre north of the notoriously dangerous Bethells Beach, when he got into trouble on Sunday afternoon. Chris McKeen Emergency services and volunteer lifeguards assisted a swimmer after an incident at the unpatrolled O'Neill Bay, just north of Bethells Beach. In 2015, Johnny Perese, 23, died after being swept under the water while swimming at Bethells Beach. Surf Life Saving NZ patrols Bethells Beach during the summer months, starting Labour weekend, but are on call for emergencies during the rest of the year.
