SWIMMER Welson Sim’s hopes of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics have been left floundering in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The freestyle specialist was initially scheduled to stay until next month before returning to compete in the Malaysian Open, an Olympic qualifying event, rom April 16-19. Unfortunately for Welson, the Covid-19 outbreak had led to the National Sports Council (NSC) recalling all their overseas athletes. Furthermore, Welson’s hope of beating the Olympic qualifying mark, at the Malaysian Open, has been dashed as the event is called off. He has until June to meet the Olympic Qualifying Time (A time) or the Olympic Standard Time (B time) but time is certainly running out for him.
