Swim nearly turns to disaster for Dunedin manPolice set up a search and rescue operation at Waikawa Harbour for a swimmer reported to have been caught in the outgoing current on SundayA man managed to make it ashore after getting into difficulties while swimming in Waikawa Harbour on the Catlins coast early on Sunday morning. His friends told police at 1.40am the man, in his 20s from Dunedin, had been caught in the outgoing current in the harbour channel. Police set up a search and rescue operation with volunteers from Waikawa Rural Fire, local commercial fishermen and members of the Tokanui LandSAR group. As the search unfolded, the man managed to swim ashore on the opposite side of the harbour. Police established the man had been drinking with a group when he was encouraged to swim out to a moored yacht.
