A massive south swell in Hawaii pushed several huge waves onto Hawaii’s main island over the weekend, pummelling homes and roadways. A viral video showed waves crashing into a seaside wedding party, and attendees running away as the water came closer at Hulihe’e Palace in Kailua-Kona. Sara Ackerman, an author who grew up in Hawaii and attended the wedding, filmed the waves as they barrelled ashore. Hawaii’s north shores, where professional surfers often compete, usually get much larger waves. The predominant swell hits the north shores in the winter and the south shores in the summer.
