A local leader of Swechchhasebak League, the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League, has been hacked to death during clashes with the BNP amid the opposition party’s general strike. Jahangir Hossain, 48, was the organising secretary of Swechchhasebak League’s Gokunda Union Council unit in Sadar Upazila. He was also the general secretary of Mahendranagr Buffer Godown Load-Unload Workers Union. Another Awami League leader and an activist were critically injured in the violence on Sunday. The BNP called the shutdown in protest against violent clashes with police during their rally in Dhaka on Saturday amid antigovernment protests for an election-time caretaker government.
