The man suspected of gunning down a Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant during a burglary Wednesday has a history of violent criminal offenses and was said to have a hot temper, according to court records and acquaintances. Lovell was living in an apartment in the same complex where the sergeant was shot, neighbors say. He was sentenced to six years in prison and was on parole when he was arrested on suspicion of shooting Owen, a 29-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. According to authorities, after Lovell shot the sheriff’s sergeant, he ran toward the front of the apartments. A second deputy arrived at the apartments and confronted the gunman, who had entered Owen’s sheriff’s cruiser and was trying to steal it.
