The accused gunman in a deadly attack on a synagogue outside San Diego pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance, as prosecutors said they would weigh the death penalty for hate-crime charges. The 19-year-old, John T. Earnest, entered his plea through a public defender during a brief arraignment Tuesday in San Diego court. Earnest appeared behind a glass panel, showing little expression and at times looking at his public defender for guidance.
