“Only 15 days ago, my daughter, Heather, was killed as she protested racism,” Susan Bro said at the beginning of a speech about Heather Heyer at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. “I miss her, but I know she’s here tonight.”While demonstrating against a rally of white supremacists and neo-Nazis advocating to protect a statue of the Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 12, a man used a car to drive into Heyer and other protestors. Heyer died after the impact. During the VMAs at The Forum in Los Angeles, a descendant of Lee’s, Reverend Robert Wright Lee IV, introduced Bro before her speech about her daughter. Lee immediately denounced his ancestor.
