When a minor earthquake hit Los Angeles in 2014, filmmaker Ryan Kuhlman and costume designer Lauren Tafuri realized they were spectacularly ill equipped for an actual disaster. “If that was a 2.5,” Kuhlman wondered, “what would an 8.0 look like?” While stocking up on emergency goods, Tafuri and Kuhlman discovered that the available options were neither easy to find nor aesthetically pleasing.
