Monster wave measured by Southern Ocean Wave Buoy https://t.co/oQQqwStOeS — MetOcean Solutions (@MetOceanNZ) May 20, 2017While huge, Saturday's wave doesn't break any world records. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) considers "significant wave height" to be the official measure of the largest sea state. Saturday's Southern Ocean wave measurement was a "maximum wave height" -- the height of an individual wave rather than an average reflecting the sea state. "Southern Ocean waves are described by sailors as 'liquid Himalayas' and remain largely unstudied, including our ability to forecast them. "During the depths of winter, Southern Ocean waves are enormous, with significant wave heights averaging over 5 meters, and regularly exceeding 10 meters.
