Supreme Court toughens its stance on food safety

Supreme Court toughens its stance on food safetyTAIPEI -- Taiwan's Supreme Court on Friday adopted a resolution that would allow stiff penalties against food manufacturers that use banned additives in their products, whether or not the additives are proven harmful to human health. The resolution, which was passed unanimously in a meeting of 40 judges, states that the penalties will also apply in cases where fake food products are presented as genuine. Such actions are now deemed a violation of the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation, regardless of whether the products are proven harmful to human health, according to a resolution. The resolution represents the shared opinion of the Supreme Court and is binding to the lower courts, Judge Hua Man-tang said. He said it is intended to address a discrepancy among courts that hear food safety cases, as some judges tend to rule based on whether the products are deemed harmful to human health, while others rule differently.
