Supreme Court to hear stay order on Gazipur polls Wednesday

The bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, will hear the petitions filed by two mayoral candidates—AL candidate Zahangir Alam and BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar. On Sunday, the HC stayed the Gazipur election scheduled forMay 15. BNP mayoral candidate filed a petition challenging the HC order. The commission’s decision came two days after the court stayed the polls responding to a writ petition filed by local Awami League leader and Shimulia-1 Union Parishad Chairman ABM Azharul Islam. Nine days prior to the polls, Islam objected to the inclusion of six administrative areas of his union as part of Gazipur city.
