The network argued that higher talent fees and lack of day-to-day supervision meant there was no employer-employee relationship but the Supreme Court dismissed it. The NLRC first declared the workers regular employees in 2015. That ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeals in 2019, prompting GMA to bring the case before the Supreme Court.
