Support package for Kaikoura announced following Monday's 7.8 earthquake

The $7.5 million package would last eight weeks, but could be extended, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said. Joyce said the package was to support businesses which were significantly affected by the closure of State Highway One and changes in the coastline, which had impacted on the fisheries business. It would be available to Kaikoura businesses and those in Cheviot, Waiau, Rotherham, Mt Lyford and Ward. Destination Kaikoura general manager Glenn Ormsby said he was yet to discuss the relief package with his members. But his initial reaction was that the region was hoping for more than eight weeks' support.
