© Mandi Wright, Detroit Free Press/Zuma PressFederal auto-safety regulators are demanding a supplier recall 67 million air-bag inflators linked to exploding incidents that have killed two people and injured others, in what could be one of the largest safety actions on record. NHTSA has been investigating ARC’s air-bag inflators for eight years, making it one of the agency’s longest-running defect investigations. The Takata case involved a similar problem of air-bag inflators exploding when deployed and spraying metal debris into the car’s interior. Those included an incident in which a 23-year-old man was killed when the driver’s side air-bag inflators in his 2006 Ford Ranger ruptured during a crash. NHTSA has linked at least 22 fatalities and more than 400 injuries to Takata air-bag explosions.
