Sun, signs and sidewalk add up to a problem on Eglinton Ave.: The Fixer

When the signs and pylons aren’t needed, some are piled along the edge of the sidewalk on the south side of Eglinton , just west of Yonge, where Katz had a nasty encounter with them on Tuesday. Muscling in on public space needed to accommodate construction involves re-routing traffic on Eglinton, east of Yonge, with the help of road signs that tell drivers where to go. Katz lives near Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave., which has to be among the noisiest and least hospitable places in the city, due to construction of more dispiriting condo towers and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line. “I was walking west on Eglinton towards Yonge around 5:30 pm, with the sun directly shining into my eyes, when I stumbled across a diamond-shaped traffic sign,” said the 76-year-old Katz. However, the diamond-shaped orange sign substantially sticks out into the sidewalk because of its size and shape.
