Hollywood takes a breather from new theatrical releases during Super Bowl weekend, but it’s still intent on grabbing as many eyeballs as possible. Rather than fighting the Super Bowl colossus, movie studios choose to ride it, via the teasers and trailers for upcoming blockbusters they run as paid advertising during the broadcast. A 2018 Super Bowl TV spot goes for a cool $5 million (U.S.) for 30 seconds, which is $3 million more than a comparable ad during last year’s Oscars telecast. Studios are willing to pony up the big dough because of the millions of viewers they’ll reach via the TV broadcast and repeat plays online.
