Sultan Nazrin: Unis must strengthen students' character, not just their knowledge

KUALA LUMPUR: Universities must build the character of their students and mould them holistically, instead of just producing large numbers of graduates, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah said, today. He highlighted the worrying prevalence of cases of corruption, breach of trust, cheating and abuse of power among “highly-educated” Malaysians in positions of power, and stressed that values such as trustworthiness and accountability should be inculcated among university students. “The higher the qualification possessed, the bigger the trust that will need to be kept (in society or an organisation). The Sultan went on to cite a 2002 Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia study which found that 30.5 per cent of respondents, which comprised university students, said that they were willing to accept bribes. Today’s convocation saw 6,562 graduates receiving postgraduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as diplomas.
