KUALA LUMPUR: The findings of the special committee on alternative sentences to replace the mandatory death sentences will be presented to the Cabinet soon for approval, says Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan. Others awaiting the death penalty, he said, include 374 inmates convicted for murder, 16 for firearms offences, six for kidnapping and two for gang robbery involving murder. Kasthuri suggested the death penalty for drug trafficking be done away with as the rise in the number of those on death row revealed such punishment did not serve as a deterrent. The former administration has imposed a moratorium on the death sentence pending the findings of the special committee.
