Sugarcane farmers’ fight set to get bitter in Maharashtra

PUNE: Though sugarcane farmers from Uttar Pradesh may get a higher cane price this year, thanks to the forthcoming state assembly elections, their counterparts in Maharashtra are gearing up for a strong battle with the millers to get a higher price as the crushing season is barely 15 days away. Considering the high level of sugar recovery of Kolhapur region , the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of mills in this part will be about Rs 2,500-Rs 2,600/tonne. “You will see the strength of our agitation this year,” said Shetty with a smiling face. We will make them pay higher cane price this year,” he said. When sugar prices are high, his cane price agitations have turned violent. But in years like the previous year, he accepted to take only 80% of the FRP as first advance of cane price as sugar prices were ruling much below the cost of production.
