The children of women with highest sugar intake during pregnancy had a 38% higher risk of allergy diagnosis, the researchers calculated. Only weak evidence linked sugar consumption during pregnancy to chronic asthma, the researchers say. However, the researchers did not examine each mother's sugar intake until after 32 weeks of pregnancy. "Eating excessive amounts of sugar in pregnancy can put the mother at risk for developing gestational diabetes," she said.
