Between 1975-90 Sri Lanka had three premier tournaments; Sara Trophy, Robert Senanayake Trophy and Lakspray Trophy. In Tests, Sri Lanka won 16 (23%), lost 22 (31%) and drew 31 (45%). In the 90’s SL won the World Cup once (1996) and subsequently ended up as runner-up in 2005 and 2011. So, what we see today in terms of the increase in the number of teams playing premier cricket should not be considered an aberrant outcome. Decision makers at Sri Lanka Cricket must weigh in all of the above and more before embarking on a path of wholesale structural change.
